Horizon Nuclear Power has appointed\u00a0Bechtel as project management contractor for its \u00a315bn Wylfa Newydd nuclear plant in north Wales.<\/p>\n

Bechtel will oversee the project and\u00a0lead\u00a0on contractual and commercial matters with the supply chain\u00a0on behalf of developer Horizon, which said the appointment would enable work \u201cto move into the next phase\u201d.<\/p>\n
The engineer already has nearly 200 personnel working with Horizon\u00a0as part of its existing role as\u00a0EPC contractor, to which\u00a0it was appointed alongside\u00a0Japanese contractor JGC in May 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n Horizon Nuclear Power, which is a subsidiary of Japanese technology giant Hitachi, also announced that it had agreed a further contract for\u00a0JGC to continue\u00a0providing support during the scheme\u2019s\u00a0development stage.<\/p>\n Construction of the Wylfa plant,\u00a0which will be located\u00a0next to the former Magnox plant\u00a0on Anglesey, could begin as early as 2020 and\u00a0create 8,500 jobs.<\/p>\n Its 2,700 MW capacity will be capable of powering\u00a0five million homes, with the plant currently slated to be operational by 2027.<\/p>\n
