Portuguese trade unions staged one-day strike against austerity

Portuguese trade unions held a one day strike on Thursday, protesting the unyielding austerity measures forced on them by the government. Public transport came to a halt in most regions, refuse collection stopped in many cities and the state-owned airline TAP warned of some disruption. This is the fourth general strike in two years, and unions are hoping that the strike action will persuade the government to relax some of their more stifling measures. Read More
