€1 billion plans announced for two new data centers in Dublin and Wicklow
€1 billion is being invested in two new data centres for Dublin and Wicklow.
Echelon Data Centres Limited is set to build the new centres in Clondalkin and Arklow.
Over 900 construction jobs will be created at the sites, followed by 190 operational posts at the company once the facilities are completed.
Echelon says planning permission has been granted for the Clondalkin site, and is “imminent” for Arklow.
The Clondalkin site are set to begin from the third quarter of 2020.
Business Minister Heather Humphreys welcomed the announcement, saying: “This €1bn investment is fantastic news for Ireland, especially as it’s one that will use a number of Irish suppliers and domestic expertise in its delivery.
“Success breeds success and Echelon’s new presence here will add to our increasing reputation as a great place to do business.
“It’s particularly encouraging to see an indigenous company making this type of commitment to a sector that we think of as being dominated by Silicon Valley giants.”
Niall Molloy, CEO of Echelon Data Centres, added: “Between our two sites in Clondalkin and Arklow, and other sites that we are in the process of identifying and acquiring in Ireland, the UK and Europe, Echelon will become one of Europe’s biggest data centre providers.”
Echelon is owned by property company Aldgate Developments, and was set up in 2017 to develop, operate and own large-scale data centre campuses across Europe.
They’re currently looking to identify sites in the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.
