EDF ask Treasury for backing on Hinkley Point nuclear site

EDF Energy are in talks with the British government over state backing of the nuclear site at Hinkley Point. EDF are asking Treasury to guarantee some of the costs involved in the new nuclear reactors that they will build in the UK. However, the British government have repeatedly stated that there will be no public subsidy for new nuclear reactors in the UK, moving against the tide of other governments who often underwrite some of the risks and costs associate with nuclear power stations.

EDF are seeking funding from the government in order to make the venture more attractive to third parties. Last week, Centrica pulled out of EDFs reactor building program. Since then, EDF have been negotiating with a Chinese company for their potential involvement instead. Read More
